LiFePO4 batteries are safer than other lithium-ion chemistry batteries, and handle correctly to ensure their longevity and safe operation. Please use LiFePO4 batteries correctly and follow safety precautions to operate them properly and prolong their life.
The following are guidelines for the safe use of LiFePO4 batteries to run trolling motors:
- Battery type and size: Make sure the voltage and capacity of the LiFePO4 battery are compatible with your trolling motor. The LiFePO4 battery has the power to meet your needs.
- Battery installation: Follow the installation and wiring instructions and choose a well-ventilated and dry location to prevent overheating and moisture.
- Use LiFePO4-specific charger: To ensure safety and prolong service life, please do not use chargers designed for other chemical batteries to avoid overcharging and over-discharging;
- Keep the battery away from flammable materials and direct sunlight, do not charge the frozen battery. Please charge in the suitable temperature range;
- Storage temperature: The storage temperature range is usually -20°C ~ 60°C (-4°F ~ 140°F);
- If the battery is stored for a long time (more than 3 months), please charge the battery to about 50% of its capacity. The battery should keep in a dry and low-temperature environment. It is recommended to add charging once in 3 months and must be charged and discharged once in 6 months of maximum time storage.
- Do not pierce, hit, or squeeze the battery, do not heat or throw the battery into fire or water.
- When transporting LiFePO4 batteries, please follow local transport regulations and guidelines, especially for air transport.
- If the battery is damaged, overheated, or expanded, stop using it and contact the manufacturer or a professional for professional guidance.
- Do not use a metal conductor to short-circuit the positive and negative terminals of the battery, and be careful not to reverse the positive and negative terminals when loading the device.
- If the battery is hot, smelly, discolored, deformed, seriously scarred, or otherwise abnormal, stop using it immediately;
- Do not disassemble the battery without permission and keep it away from children;
- If the electrolyte accidentally gets into your eyes, do not rub your eyes, wash them immediately with clean water and go to the hospital for an eye examination.
Why shouldn't you leave your trolling motor LiFePO4 batteries submerged in water for long periods?
LiFePO4 batteries are highly water resistant, but should not left in water for long periods. When the battery pack comes into contact with water, it is easy to damage the battery’s internal circuitry and pose a safety risk. Water is a conductor of electricity, so if the battery terminals and internal components are immersed in water, it may cause a short circuit, leading to overheating or thermal runaway. Prolonged exposure to water will corrode the battery terminals and connecting wires, affecting the battery’s performance. The trolling motor LiFePO4 battery case is a gasket designed to prevent water from damaging the electrolyte, but prolonged water immersion will affect the capacity, and voltage, and shorten the battery life.
If your trolling motor LiFePO4 battery is accidentally exposed to water or moisture, take the following remedial action:
- If the battery connects to a device or charger, disconnect it immediately.
- Please take the battery out of the humid environment and dry the battery thoroughly with a clean towel to ensure that the internal and external components are dry.
- Please check the battery for damage or corrosion. If there is any abnormality, please consult the manufacturer or professional for help.
- If the battery is severely damaged and can no longer be used, it should be disposed of safely according to local hazardous waste regulations.
